LOOKING GOOD IN GREEN & GOLDSINCE 1928

Hudson Falls businessmen William Angleson, Fred Burns and Dr, Francis D. Moynihan founded the Hudson Falls Greenjackets.

Initial financial support came from local merchants and equipment was loaned to the team by Hudson Falls and Whitehall High Schools. Named the Greenjackets as part of a contest in ’28 by a young girl. She won a free pass to all of the games that season!

The Hudson Falls Greenjackets – also known as the Green Jackets and sometimes as the Greenbacks – began semi-pro football play in 1928 with all home games at Derby Park. Opponents during the inaugural 1928 season were the Saratoga Collegians, Troy Pleasantdales, Schenectady Bellevues, Fort Ethan Allen Army Elite, Albany Cardinals, Saratoga Hilltops, and the Watervliet Merriams. The Greenjackets finshed that season with a 7-1-1 record with the only loss coming to the Saratoga Collegians and a tie with the Albany Cardinals.

The first Greenjacket’s game was held on October 14, 1928 against Saratoga – admission was only 35¢ cents.

In May 1969, The Greenjackets joined the Empire Football League as a charter member, winning the inaugural championship. The ‘Jackets went on to win 5 more championships in 1976, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2017.

In 2023, the Greenjackets joined the New England Football League and defeated the Middleboro Cobras 12-6 in overtime to win the championship.

Memories from an original member of the 1928 Greenjackets team, Dick Carpenter.

Such as when a bunch of guys on a street corner came together to form a football team. Dick remembered that the Greenjackets held a contest that first year to get a name for their team. A little girl, who no one can remember, came up with the name “Greenjackets” and won a free pass for all of the 1928 games. The admission was 35 cents a game.

The league in 1928 was made up of such teams as the Watervliet Merriams, Saratoga Brown Bears, and Fort Ethan Allen from Vermont, which was an Army team. It was nice playing the Army team at their fort in Vermont because they would feed the Greenjackets beans and homemade corn bread after the game, and after everyone had eaten the Army players would bet the Greenjackets players that they couldn’t ride the pack mules for a full minute. Many a .25 cent bet changed hands.
